ISC steward Mary Rice has completed a nerve wracking abseil to raise money for the company's chosen charity, St Lukes Hospice
Mary, who has worked with ISC for two years, joined 97 other fundraisers to take the 100ft plunge from Northwick Park Hospital this February, along with her 17 year old son Conor.
Mary had a triple heart bypass in February2008. Following her recovery she undertook The Personal Best Program course at Northwest London College, part of the course of which was to do volunteer work at St Lukes shop in Kingsbury. "I thought I could give something back to them by doing the abseil," she said. "The hardest part was having to lower myself over the rooftop to start the climb because I am absolutely terrified of heights, but with the fabulous instructors and encouragement from my son I managed it!When I did reach the ground I was ecstaticI had done it, I was in one piece, and my husband who was waiting at the bottom for me started to breathe again, I was so proud of myself!"
It was through the PBS course Mary got her job with ISC at Wembley Stadium. "We had a lesson every Tuesday at the Stadium with two instructors called Steve and Matt, and I got so caught up in their enthusiasm for the workings of the stewards that I kept telling them I want a job here please!" she explained.
Matt wrote a brilliant reference for me and the rest is history. I've been at ISC working as a steward for nearly two years now and I still love it. I've been working on level two with Tony Camilleri and he is teaching me how to become the second best handicap steward, him being number one of course!"
"As for any more events with St Lukes, my son is trying to talk me into skydiving for my birthday/wedding anniversary in September, help!"
